Aruna Quadri Bows to Gao Ning in Thrilling Six-Set Final, Team Nigeria Finish 9th

Aruna Quadri settled for Silver in the Men’s Singles final against Malaysia’s Gao Ning in a thrilling six set match at the XXI Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

The encounter ended 4-2 in favor of the 35-year-old Malaysian who won 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-3, 9-11, 5-11 on the last day of events at the Gold Coast.

 

In their previous meeting, Ning defeated the Nigerian in the Men’s Singles, third round match at the 2014 Commonwealth Games; en route to a spot in the final – the Asian won all four sets.

 

Although he ranked 21 places higher than his opponent, Aruna (26) was expected to come out second best against his older opponent.

 

The win helped Malaysia secure their seventh gold at the games.

 

In the Bronze medal match, India’s Sharath Achanta defeated England’s Samuel Walker to pick finish third.

 

Meanwhile, Aruna’s silver brought Team Nigeria’s medal haul to 24 (Gold 9, Silver 9, Bronze 6) which saw them finish 9th on the overall medal’s table.

 

Nigeria presented 89 athletes in 10 sports.
