D’Tigress beats Mali to lift fifth Afrobasket title

Nigeria Women Basketball team D’Tigress have won the 2021 Women Afrobasketall title in Cameroon on Sunday.

The defending Champions defeated Mali 70-59 in Sunday’s final played in Yaounde to lift the title third straight time.

The Hughley Jr ladies won the competition back to back in 2017 and 2019 respectively, before the last victory over Mali.

Nigeria dominated the Malians from the start went into brak with a 31-24 points scoreline.

The 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup quarter-finalist cruised 59-38 lead in the third quarter, before wrapping up with 70-59 points.

Nigeria have now won the title for the fifth time in their history and they have also booked their place in the next FIBA World Cup.

D’Tigress’ captain Adaora Elonu bagged the Most Valuable Player award of the tournament as she coordinated the team to a third straight continental title. Elonu, who scooped 12 points, four rebounds in the final was also named among the All-Tournament team alongside Nigeria team-mate, Ezinne Kalu.

The victory against Mali meant Nigeria are unbeaten in their last 19 games. Five of them were recorded at this edition by defeating Mozambique 67–50 in their opener game and thrashed Angola 65–85 to top Group.
