Ighalo deserves permanent deal at United – Owen Hargreaves

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves says Odion Ighalo is a perfect fit for the club and should, therefore, be given a new contract.

Ighalo joined United on a six-month loan deal from Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua in the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old has gone on to impress at the club after scoring four goals from eight appearances across all competitions.

However, the former Super Eagles striker could be on his way out of Old Trafford as his loan deal will expire at the end of the month.

And with the return of Marcus Rashford from injury, it remains to be seen if United would be willing to match Shenhua’s £20 million valuations of the striker.

Hargreaves believes Ighalo has done enough to deserve a new deal.

“I think he’s been a good fit for Man United and when you sign players you’ve got to get the right fit,” Hargreaves told talkSPORT.

“It’s not always about getting the best name, it’s about getting the guy that you don’t have that you need.”

“Hopefully he stays but there’s the whole Sanchez situation when he comes back, Martial and Rashford, he’s fit as well, Bruno [Fernandes] and [Paul] Pogba – you’ve got to get them all into a team, with Daniel James as well.”

“So he’s been good, really good. I’m sure they’ll try, if it’s sensible, keep him longer. I’d be surprised if he left.”
