Laslo Djere celebrates emotional win in Rio

Serbia’s Laslo Djere won his first career title at the Rio Open on Sunday and dedicated the victory to his parents, both of whom died from cancer.

The 23-year-old, Serbian won his first senior final defeating Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 7-5 in the final and will rise from 90 in the world ranking to 37 today.

In an emotional trophy presentation, his first thoughts were for his parents “I want to dedicate this title to my parents – I lost my mum seven years ago and my dad two months ago. It’s due to them that I am who I am today, I hope they are watching me now,” said Djere.

Djere started the tournament in Brazil by knocking off Dominic Thiem to secure his first top-10 scalp and maintained the rage to reach the final without dropping a set.

He broke Auger-Aliassime twice to start the first set but also dropped a service game himself before regaining his composure and going on to win the match.
