Nigeria Vs Cameroon: Rohr hands over No.1 shirt to FC IfeanyiUbah’s Ikechukwu Ezenwa

Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr, has confirmed that FC Ifeanyi Ubah goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, will start in goal for Nigeria in Friday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon.

Ezenwa has been second choice behind Carl Ikeme since the Wolverhampton Wanderers man replaced Vincent Enyeama as Nigeria’s number one, but was overlooked in favour of Daniel Akpeyi when Ikeme pulled out injured from the squad to play Algeria earlier this year.

Ezenwa, who captained Nigeria’s Africa Nations Championship squad that eliminated Benin Republic penultimate weekend to qualify for next year’s continental finals in Kenya, will have an opportunity to keep his place in the team if he performed well.

“It is unfortunate now that we have a problem in the goalkeeping side with three goalkeepers out,” Rohr told the media on Wednesday, “but Ikechukwu Ezenwa will be in goal for us, and I am confident that he will do a good job.

“We will support him, and the players will support him to make a good game.”

South Africa –based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, who was in goal in the November 2016, 3-1 win over Algeria at the same venue, has finally been ruled out of action on Friday as a result of injury.

Former junior international Dele Ajiboye, who is number one goal –tender for Nigeria Professional Football League table–toppers Plateau United, has been called in to replace Akpeyi.
