Nigerian Players Shine and Flop on Penultimate Weekend in La Liga

Across three match venues on Sunday, three Nigerian players were involved in action for the respective sides on the penultimate weekend of La Liga.

LEGANES 0-2 ESPANYOL

After two straight games where he put in top performances, Kenneth Omeruo was hoping to help his side to securing points on home turf on Sunday as Leganes welcomed Espanyol.

However, things quickly turned awry as the home side were trailing with just over a quarter of an hour of football played.

But things would go from bad to worse as Omeruo’s Central Defensive partner, Unai Bustinza was shown a second yellow and subsequently sent off at the stroke of half-time.

At that point there was no coming back from the deep for Mauricio Pellegrini’s men and in the 71st minute, the visitors extended their lead.

A 2-0 scoreline that proved enough for Espanyol to walk away with three maximum points from Estadio Municipal de Butarque.

VILLARREAL 1-0 EIBAR

Samuel Chukwueze made his 26th league appearance of the season on Sunday as Villarreal continued their push towards safety in La Liga.

The young Nigerian made his presence felt as he showed even greater composure and gait, completing more take ons than any player on the pitch (5).

However, he would not have any goal contribution, to add to his five goals and two assists in the league on the day.

He would later be replaced on the 90+1′ minutes for Veteran forward Carlos Bacca.

RAYO VALLECANO 1-2 VALLADOLID

Rayo Vallecano’s relegation was long confirmed, but it didn’t stop the Madrid based side from losing some more and they fell on Match day 37 at home, with Uche Agbo playing 90 minutes.

Agbo made his fifth league appearance and his second full home appearance, on which occasion he was on of his side’s better players.

A 7.1 rating was fourth best for any Rayo player and the midfielder was impressive in his pass success rating as well as successful tackles won.

GIRONA 1-2 LEVANTE

Moses Simon was an unused substitute.
