Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers stated that he decided to seek a transfer from Genk because of compatriot Paul Onuachu.
Dessers spent most of the 2020-2021 campaign on the bench, no thanks. To Onuachu blistering form that saw him score 35 goals for the club.
After the record-breaking performance, Onuachu was heavily linked with a transfer and Dessers believes he’s good enough to replace him at the Club.
However, things didn’t work out for Onuachu in the transfer market, and decided to sign a new two-year contract.
“All summer I assumed that Paul would leave and that I would compete with his replacement for a starting spot. Ten days before the closing of the Mercato I became nervous and realized that I had to take my destiny into my own hands,” he told HLN.
“I reasoned: when Paul leaves I’m in top shape, I have the confidence. But instead, I stayed on the bench for 90 minutes.
“Then I felt that it wasn’t right and that was the click for me to quickly look for a solution.”
Dessers later secured a season-long loan move to Feyenoord and he has scored two goals for the club in his last four matches.
