The Argentine Football Association have revealed that Jorge Sampaoli has left his position as head coach of Argentina following a disappointing 2018 World Cup.
Argentina managed to squeeze into the knockout round of this summer’s competition but suffered a 4-3 defeat to France in the round of 16.
Sampaoli only took charge of Argentina in May 2017 but was reportedly under orders from Lionel Messi when it came to selection during this summer’s World Cup.
The 58-year-old agreed to ‘mutually terminate his contract’, according to a statement from the AFA.
“On Sunday, the Argentina Football Association and the former national team coach, Jorge Sampaoli, have mutually agreed to the termination of their contract.
Likewise, the physical trainer, Jorge Desio and the video analyst, Matias Manna, also disassociated themselves,” read the statement.
