Shorunmu defends under-fire Golden Eaglets coach Fatai Amoo

Ex international Ike Shorunmu has offered a blunt assessment of Golden Eaglets coach Fatai Amoo after slow start to 2021 WAFU championship.

Fatai Amoo came under heavy criticisms from Nigeria football lovers following the five time world champions defeat to Baby Elephants of Ivory Coast in Lome on Wednesday.

The Golden Eaglets were outplayed for much part of the match and needed goalkeeper Destiny Emuwahem’s solid super reflexes in goal to keep the scoreline respectable.

The result left Eaglets’ hope of reaching the the last four hanging in balance, but all that could change should they record a commanding victory over next opponents Ghana on Saturday.

Speaking to brila.net on the criticism of the coach and the team, Ike Shorunmu said it is unfortunate that the head of the coach is always on the line when results are coming.

“Football is about results and teams don’t win, the coach will receive the sticks, but I can’t tell you that many people won’t question Amoo’s appointments if the team is winning.” He told brila.net.

“Whether he’s the right coach for team or not, wouldn’t have been topic of debate, if they had won against Ivory Coast, and the criticism is coming too early because they are not out of the tournament.”

“Again, age grade competitions is developmental, so it’s not about winning all the time, so, I will urged everyone to support the team and the coach. ” He told brila.net.
