10 THINGS TO KNOW FOR THE UPCOMING National Football SEASON (PREDICTIONS, BETKING BETTINGS TIPS & MORE)

The new season kicks off in a month while the pre-season starts this weekend. Here are a few things to look forward to, as well as some betting tips.

Things To Look Forward To

Must Watch Game of The Season: Kansas City Chiefs vs Buffalo Bills (October 16)

The MVP award in the NFL is a narrative-driven award, there’s a very high chance that this game could decide which young QB will be this season’s MVP. Just like Football’s Kylian Mbappe & Erling Haaland have been tipped to dominate the beautiful game over the next ten years, Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) & Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills) are both similarly poised to dominate the NFL for the next decade.

Both teams met in the playoffs last year in a game so exhilarating that the NFL changed its 12-year-old overtime rule in a bid to make it fairer.

Both Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen are heavy favourites to win the MVP this season and when these two teams meet on the 16th of October, there’s a high chance the winner of the game’s Quarterback would be crowned MVP at the end of the season.

  • Josh Allen to win MVP: 5
  • Patrick Mahomes to win MVP: 5
  • Tom Brady to win MVP: 0
  • Aaron Rodgers to win MVP: 5
  • Justin Herbert to win MVP:0

JuJu Smith-Schuster on the Kansas City Chiefs

With Tyreek Hill leaving the Chiefs and taking his talents to the Miami Dolphins, Patrick Mahomes’ priority will be to create chemistry with his new Wide Receiver, JuJu Smith-Schuster as soon as possible.

Juju came into the league with a lot of promise, gaining 917yards in his Rookie season and 1,426yards the next. Sadly, he’s failed to replicate his form from 2018 due to injuries and other off-field issues.

Now that he has Patrick Mahomes throwing him the ball & offensive guru Andy Reid coaching him, a bounce-back season is in the cards.

Dallas Cowboys Early Coaching Change

Being the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys is like being the Head Coach of Manchester United or the LA Lakers; you’ll face the intense pressure that comes with coaching the most popular team in your sport.

Mike McCarthy’s men start the season with a trip to Tampa Bay to play Tom Brady and the Buccaneers and then host Super Bowl runners-up, Cincinnati Bengals. A loss in both games (which isn’t unimaginable) could see Mike McCarthy lose his job, especially with the super talented Sean Payton (who is without a coaching job) reportedly lurking around.

Indiana Colts Winning A Playoff Game

The Colts have had a tough few years. From Franchise Quarterback Andrew Luck’s premature retirement in 2019 to Carson Wentz blowing their playoff chances with that bizarre interception last season.

This year, however, there’s cause for optimism. They have Offensive Player of the Year, Jonathan Taylor ready to go again while former league MVP Matt Ryan is an upgrade at the Quarterback position.

In defence, they have Kwity Paye, Yannick Ngakoue and DeForest Buckner as well as the newly added 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, Stephon Gilmore all to be coached by Defensive Coordinator Gus Bradley. Barring a devastating key injury, they’ll not only win their division (AFC South) but also win a playoff game for the first time since 2018.

BetKing Betting Tips

New Division Winner in The NFC EAST?

The NFC East has not had a team win the division in consecutive seasons since The Eagles did in 2004. This is bad news for the world’s most valuable sports team, the Dallas Cowboys who won it last year before crashing out in the Wildcard Round of the Playoffs.

The smart pick to win the division are The Eagles. In his first year as the starting Quarterback, Jalen Hurt had an 8-7 record, passed for 3,144 yards but even more impressively, rushed for 784 yards; the most by any Quarterback in the league making him one of the top dual-threats in the league.

There’s also the addition of star Wide Receiver AJ Brown to the Eagles roster which should guarantee them more wins. While the Dallas Cowboys will not easily give up their crown & the Washington Commanders are also expected to give a decent push, the Philadelphia Eagles should win the division come January.

  • Dallas Cowboys to win the NFC East: 25
  • Philadelphia Eagles to win the NFC East: 85
  • Washington Commanders to win the NFC East: 0

Betting on The AFC West Division

The AFC West is by far the most entertaining division the league has seen in years, decades maybe. Any of its 4 teams could easily make the Super Bowl and it wouldn’t be the most shocking thing.

The Denver Broncos with former Super Bowl Champion Russell Wilson would be looking to improve on their 7-win season while the LA Chargers, on the back of MVP candidate Justin Herbert, would be hoping to make the playoffs for the first time since 2018.

The Las Vegas Raiders and their new look offence featuring star Wide Receiver Devante Parker and new Head Coach Josh McDaniels (a 6-time Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriots coaching staff) will also be looking to make a deep playoff run.

Finally, there’s Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs who have made it to the AFC Championship Game an impressive 4 times in a row. These are 4 heavyweights all in one division.

The wisest approach to betting on NFL games between these teams is avoiding straight wins due to its unpredictability; go for the Over on Point Totals in games since we’re going to be seeing a lot of elite offences.

Defensive Player of the Year

Pittsburgh Steelers’ TJ Watt was crowned Defensive Player of the Year and the smart money is to bet on him repeating this feat. His 22.5 sacks last year are the joint most in NFL history since sacks began being recorded in 1982.

As if this wasn’t scary enough, Defensive Guru Brian Flores who controversially left his Head Coaching role at Miami Dolphins is now the senior Defensive Assistant and Linebackers Coach at the Pittsburgh Steelers and there’s no doubt he’ll improve TJ Watt even further.

While TJ Watt is the smart pick, don’t count out Cleveland Browns’ Myles Gareth (who is the bookie’s favourite), the Bosa Brothers, Joey (LA Chargers) & Nick (San Francisco 49ers) and of course, Aaron Donald, one of the greatest defenders the NFL has ever seen.

  • Myles Garrett to win DPOY: 5
  • Aaron Donald to win DPOY: 5
  • J. Watt to win DPOY: 8.0

NFL Comeback Player of the Year

The NFL explains its Comeback Player of the Year Award as an award given to a player who has shown perseverance in overcoming adversity, in the form of not being in the NFL the previous year, a severe injury, or simply poor performance.

This award looks ready-made for Tennessee Titans Running Back, Derrick Henry. Derrick Henry led the entire league in both Rushing Yards & Touchdowns in 2019 & 2020 while setting the record for most Rushing yards (2,027 yards) in 2020.

He was on his way to repeating these feats last year before a broken bone in his foot ruled him out for the season. If he plays close to the level he was at before the injury, he should win the award ahead of New Orleans Saints Michael Thomas and Christian McCaffrey (Carolina Panthers).

  • Derrick Henry to be named Comeback Player of the Year: 5
  • Jameis Winston to be named Comeback Player of the Year: 0
  • Christian McCaffrey to be named Comeback Player of the Year: 0

Rushing Yards Leaders

Jonathan Taylor won this last year as the focal point of the Indiana Colts offence. This also earned him the Offensive Player of the Year Award and he’s expected to win the award for the second year in a row. Elsewhere, a healthy Derrick Henry (Tennessee Titans) will be looking to reclaim the award he won in 2019 & 2020 before getting hurt last year while Cleveland Browns’ Nick Chubb is also expected to make a push.

  • Jonathan Taylor to win: 5
  • Derrick Henry to win:5
  • Nick Chubb to win: 0

Passing Touchdown Leader

The legendary Tom Brady (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) led this category last season which was the 5th time in his Hall of Fame career, and he’s been favoured to repeat this.

However, in the absence of both Antonio Brown and his decade-old safety blanket, Rob Gronkowski, he could find that hard to replicate.

Justin Herbert (LA Chargers) could be the smart choice here. He has the most passing touchdowns by a rookie quarterback (31) & is first quarterback to record 30 touchdown passes in each of his first two seasons. His strong arm is his biggest weapon and he’s not afraid to show it off.

  • Tom Brady to win: 0
  • Justin Herbert to win: 0
  • Josh Allen to win: 5
  • Patrick Mahomes to win: 0
  • Matthew Stafford to win: 0
