It was a great first day at the office for Nigerian players in the preliminary stage of the ongoing ITTF World Championships in Düsseldorf Germany with four out of five players representing the country all recording wins thereby strengthening their push for the group stage of the championship in the men and women’s singles.
With one more game needed to officially seal his qualification, Nigeria’s Ojo Onaolapo recorded two wins in match day one of the championships defeating Savia Christos of Cyprus 11-2, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7 before thrashing Maimjoglian of Lebanon 4-0. 11-6, 11-9, 11-8, 11-5. Up next for him is the final group match against second placed Gommers Radjko of the Netherlands today by 2 pm.
Also in the men’s singles Nigeria’s Omotayo Olajide placed one foot in the group stage after defeating Bajada Daniel of Malta 11-9, 11-5, 11-4, 11-7. To seal his qualification, he will have to beat Pletea Christian of Romania by 12:30 pm today.
In the women’s singles, the duo of Olufunke Oshonaike and Edem Offiong both recorded wins in their first match to boost their chances of hitting the group stage while Cecelia Otu-Akpan was walked over in her first game.
Current African champion Oshonaike will today play Kapugeekiyana Hasani of Sri Lanka by 11 am today. Oshonaike had yesterday defeated 12-year-old Filipino Rizumu Ono 4-2. 15-13, 11-8, 12-10, 8-11, 6-11, 12-10 while Edem Offiong who will also face Ashtari Mashid of Iran to book her qualification beat Bsaibes Maysa of Lebanon 11-9, 11-1, 11-4 11-7.
