Samuel Kalu’s Watford debut ended in defeat

Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu made his debut for Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.

The 24-year-old featured in Watford’s 2-3 defeat to Arsenal at the Vicarage Road.

Kalu came on for his debut in the second half, when Coach Roy Hodgson introduced him for Tom Cleverley in the 89th minute.

The former Bordeaux man almost scored a goal for Hornets few minutes later. He skipped past Soares and cut inside the box, before deciding to go for goal. His powerful shot was punch away by Aaron Ramsdale.

Martin Odegaard opened the scoring with the first of three beautifully-worked Arsenal goals when he slid a low finish past Ben Foster after exchanging passes with Saka in the early stages (5).

Six minutes later, Watford levelled the game with Cucho Hernandez netting the pick of the afternoon’s goals when he slammed home a stunning overhead kick from Kiko Femenia’s right-wing cross.

Arsenal restalled their lead, when Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli then scored in the 30th and 52nd minutes.

With three minutes left to play, Moussa Sissoko scored Watford’s second of the game, but Arsenal held on for a vital win.

It was the eighth Premier League victory in their last 10 games, moving them into the Champions League places, while Watford remain 19th on the table.
