A Poacher’s Strike! Ex Super Eagles star praises Koulibaly’s winner against Ecuador

Kalidou Koulibaly scored the winner as Senegal edged Ecuador 2-1 to progress to the last 16 of the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The African Champions went into the game needing three points, while Ecuador needed at least a point to seal qualification.

Aliou Cisse’s men drew the first blood through Ismaila Sarr’s penalty kick in the first half.

The South Americans responded in the second half and got the equalizer, thanks to midfielder Moises Caicedo who tapped home after a Felix Torres flick on a free kick.

Just two minutes after conceding, some sloppy marking at the other end allowed Koulibaly to volley home the winner.

Senegal held on for dear life amid a late Ecuador bombardment on their goal, but the Teranga Lions held on for a historic qualification.

Speaking on Koulibaly’s winner, former Super Eagles forward Efan Ekoku, who was one of the English commentators for the game, praised the 31 year-old defender for the emphatic finish.

“All I can say is that you’re never more vulnerable than when you just scored.

“But just as Senegal were culpable in being a little absent-minded defensively, equally so was Ecuador.

“The ball beats five or six player, you just have to react. Kalidou Koulibaly with the movement of a striker and the finish of a real marksman. He didn’t lash out of the ball, he coolly side-footed it,” Ekoku said.

Senegal will now face England in the round of 16.
