Aghahowa berates referee for awarding contentious penalty against Ghana

Former Super Eagles striker Julius Aghahowa was left furious after the center referee awarded a soft penalty to Portugal against Ghana on Thursday.

Aghahowa, speaking on Brila FM believes the decision was harsh on the West African and the referee should consulted the pitch side monitor, before awarding the penalty.

The Portuguese went in front in the 64th minute through penalty taken by Ronaldo after Ghana was penalized.

The replay, however, showed Ghana defender Salisu got the ball before Ronaldo, but the referee refused to have a second look at the situation.

“The penalty awarded to Portugal demoralized Ghana. The referee should have gone to the monitor to confirm that it was indeed a penalty. He didn’t and that affected the Ghanaians.

“The penalty is contestable. My problem with that is the ref didn’t even go to check,” Aghahowa told Brila FM.

“But thankfully they scored two goals and spiritedly went for the third and should motivate the team going into the two” He concluded.

Ghana did come back into the game, leveling through Ayew in the 73rd minute, but Portugal dug deep to win 3-2.
