Aghahowa on Implication of Closed door game for Super Eagles

Julius Aghahowa would relish seeing the start their African Cup Nations qualifiers with a victory against Sierra Leone even if it has to be in empty stadium.

Aghahowa believes that Nigerians will continue to cheer the team, even if supporters were not allowed to attend game, following a Stadium ban imposed by FIFA.

Recall the World Football Governing Body ruled that Nigeria would play a game behind the closed doors, after fans invaded the pitch during the World Cup qualification playoff match against Ghana in March.

“I don’t think, it’s going to have any impact on the game, because players are always professional and would want to win the game,” Aghahowa told brila.net.

“Although the presence of the fans would give the team more support and boost their moral, especially when it comes to major qualifiers like this.

“But we already know what is at stake, so we have to focus and make sure we will win this game.”

The former Bendel Insurance player, who earned 34 caps for Nigeria, was also asked about the invitation of eight home based players for the test games against Mexico and Ecuador.

He added: It’s a fantastic decision, some of us have clamored for these players to be given opportunity, and by that, the league will get a big boost and players.

“It’s a welcome development and I expect more players to come in and make the team.”

“It will improve the confidence of the players and also when they get the stage, they’re go improve. When they mix with the foreign pros, they’ll know what’s expected of them.

The qualification matches for 2023 AFCON will begin 30 May, 2022 at home against Sierra Leone.
