Nigerian internationals Ola Aina and Josh Maja featured for Fulham in their 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday.
Aina returned to Fulham’s starting lineup for the game, despite missing Nigeria’s final African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Lesotho due to knock.
Maja on his part was replaced in the first eleven by in-form Aleksandar Mitrovic who scored five goals in the last three international games for Serbia and it was his first start since early February.
The other two Nigerians on Fulham’s payroll Tosin Adarabioyo and Ademola Lookman also played a part in the match, but they all failed to deliver something special on a day the club needs a hero.
Aleksandar Mitrovic to open the scoring for Fulham, rounding Emi Martinez before slotting into an empty net (61) for his first goal since September.
Substitute, Trezeguet started the comeback for Villa by scoring two goals in three minutes for his club.
The Egyptian scored his first with a cool finish from Tyrone Mings’s pass in the 78th minute, before converting at the back post from sub-Keinan Davis’ cross four minutes later.
Watkins killed off Fulham’s hope of coming back with a close-range finish from Bertrand Traore’s cross late on (87), giving Villa three points that had seemed so unlikely late in the second half.
The result means Fulham is three points behind 17th-place Newcastle, having played an extra game.
