Ajax boss reveals Bassey’s best position

Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder says Super Eagles star Calvin Bassey is more of a centre back than a left back.

There has been confusion over the favourite position of the player in recent months, since his emergence on the big scene at Glasgow Rangers.

The 22-year-old plays both positions so well that, Ajax had to spend £16.8m to sign him up, following the departure of Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United.

Bassey, however, has settled down quickly at the his new club, having started the last two Dutch Eredivisie games for the league leaders from start to finish.

He has formed good partnership with Jurrien Timber in the heart of the defense and the duo helped the former European Champions to flawless wins, and with clean sheets in back to back league games against Sparta Rotterdam and FC Utrecht.

Speaking on the role of Bassey in the team, Schreuder pointed out that the player will continue to play in the same position as he did at Rangers.

“With Rangers he played 12-14 games [as a CB]. He can do well there and has a good pass, but the spaces were tight.

“It comes down to precision and recognizing the moments. We could’ve gone more through Daley. Still improvement needed, but it’s normal,” He said.

Bassey has made three appearances for Ajax Amsterdam since the start of the season.
