Ajax manager John Heitinga says He’s happy to have Calvin Bassey in his squad, despite the recent criticisms from the club faithfuls.

Heitinga told ESPN per football Scotland, he’s ready to help the Nigerian defender the develop ball-playing aspect of his game.

The young defender has not had the best of time in the Eredivisie and often been targeted by some of the club’s fans and ex-stars for criticisms.

Bassey saw his playing opportunities at the club reduced following the departure of Alfred Schreuder, the man who sanctioned a €23million-transfer for him last summer.

The 23 year-old has started only one game in Ajax’s last six games since, but Heitinga insists, he remains committed to helping him reach the top.

“Calvin is a top professional. He comes from Glasgow and knows a different way of playing,” Heitinga said.

“In Holland, a lot is demanded of the ball and you play with a lot of space behind you.

“He can defend. We have to help him and make sure he has plenty of opportunities, but we know how long the rest of the season is. We are going to need him,” He concluded.
