Akashili headlines Elephant Girls’ roster ahead of FIBA AWCC 2017

Nigeria side First Bank Basketball Club have released a star studded 12-player final roster for the upcoming FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup taking place in the Angolan capital Luanda from November 10 – 19.

Four FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Champions including Nkechi Akashili, Chioma Udeaja, Cecilia Okoye and Ugochi Nicole Nwaigwe, and Ivorian International Minata Fofana make up the core of the team led by Peter Ahmedu.

Talking to FIBA.basketball before flying to Angola, Ahmedu stated that all the players selected after the camp have the required experience for continental tournament.

“The camping exercise afforded the technical crew an opportunity to have a closer look at the players at our disposal which was helpful in the final decision”.

Despite the absence of point guard Upe Atosu, the 45-year-old tactician is confident that his side has what it takes to make great impact in Luanda, as the inclusion of five players who took part at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2017 would boost the team and give them the needed morale to do well.

The “Bankers”, who claimed a Third-Place finish at last year’s edition in Maputo, Mozambique have their eyes set on the top two places this time round.

“This is a very important Championship for us. This year, our main target is to play in the Final. This is not to say that we’re underrating any team but we want to go beyond our position last year.”
