Akwa United boss Ayeni hails Squad… argues NPFL Players are Mentally exhausted

Akwa United Head Coach Deji Ayeni believes the team’s squad depth proved important in last weekend’s win in the NPFL against Lobi Star.

Ayeni was without several key players owing to injury and suspension, but Akwa United still managed to grind out a 1-0 victory when it hosted Lobi Stars at the Nest of Champions on Sunday.

“It is good to have a very solid depth and as you can see we didn’t feel the absence of some players today and that’s because we also have a solid bench,” the Akwa United Coach explained.

Akwa United are currently unbeaten in the last six games, a form that moved then to fifth spot and just two points adrift Rangers, who are the last continental spot on the table.

However, Ayeni insists the team is still a work in progress.

“We are still a work in progress and we won’t stop working until we achieve our aim of picking a continental slot.”

Next for Akwa United is an away game against Katsina United and the former could be without key defender Samson Gbadebo and other first team players for the game.

“The crashed programme of the league is telling on the boys, I must tell you.

“The long distance journey and all that, but we have to strategize and work on the mental strength of the players, because all the players in the league are mentally sick, in terms of the crashed program of the league.”

“But we’ll go to Katsina and try to get a good result,” he concluded.
