Charles Atshimene netted the opener inside the opening three minutes following a terrible defending from the visitors.
The striker grabbed his second of the game in the 24th minutes when he converted a pass from his assistant captain Ubong Friday.
Heartland responded and reduced the deficit immediately, thanks to a goal from Chijoke Akuneto.
The Kennedy Boboye led side sealed the victory in the second half with Ubong Friday’s emphatic finish.
With the win, the Akwa United have now extended their unbeaten record to 16 games and they leapfrogged Kano Pillars on the table.
The promise keepers will travel to Kaduna to face Kano Pillars day in a top of the table clash on Sunday.
