Akwa United trounce past Rivers United 3-0 in Uyo

Akwa United defeated Rivers United 3-0 in Sunday’s NPFL week 13 fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Coach Kennedy Boboye made just one change to the starting line up against Enyimba, with striker Mfon Udoh given the nod to start after recovering from illness while Ubong Essien started on the bench.

After a cagey first 30 minutes, veteran forward Mfon Udoh gave Akwa the lead in the 40th minute, following Seth Mayi’s assist.

The goal was Mfon Udoh’s third of the season since returning from his adventures in United States.

Charles Atshimene added the second early in the second half of the encounter after he capitalised on Theophilus Afelokhai’s error to score his third goal of the season.

Rivers United almost pull one back in the 71st minute, Godwin Aguda combined well with Fortune Omoniwari who saw his effort saved by Adewale Adeyinka.

Morice Chukwu scored the third when he curled home a super free from edge of the area after Ikechukwu Nwani was brought down just outside Rivers United’s box.

The victory over the Pride of Rivers moves Akwa United to 22 points from 13 games having scored 16 goals and letting in nine.

The win is Akwa United’s sixth victory of the season and their fifth win at home in seven matches. They will next engage Warri Wolves on Match-day 14 away from home.
