Algeria‘s match winner Riyad Mahrez has revealed that his side are happy to reach the final of the 2019 African Cup of Nations at the expense of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The Algerians last won the title back in 1990 , when they defeated Nigeria 1-0 in Algiers, however, the Desert Foxes recorded another important victory over the Nigerians in the semi-final of the 2019 edition in Egypt.
Tournament leading scorer , Odion Ighalo scored from the penalty spot late in the second half to cancelled out Troost Ekong‘s first halfown goal, but Mahrez scored a free-kick in the final minute of the additional time to hand the Desert Foxes a final tickets.
The Manchester city forward who was voted man of match after the game, said his side deserves to be in the final , after such performance.
“It was a very tough game today against a strong team,” Mahrez told media after receiving his Man of the Match award.
“We were one goal up and were in control before VAR’s decision – they scored the penalty and in the last minute we converted our free kick.
“We are very happy because to be in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations is something unbelievable”.
“I think we have been very good in this tournament. We scored 12 goals and conceded two, that is the source of our confidence.
“We are looking forward to the final against Senegal. We played them in the group stage and we are expecting another tough game.“He stated.
The Djamel Belmadi‘s men will have a chance to win their secondcontinental title when they face Senegal in the final.
