Anthony Nwakaeme fires blank as Trabzonspor’s unbeaten run comes to an end

Super Eagles Anthony Nwakaeme was on parade for Trabzonspor in their 3-2 to Rizespor in the Turkish Super Lig on Friday.

The striker and his teammates came into the game with three months unbeaten run, but everything crashed against a leveled spirited Rizerspor.

Nwakaeme who has scored 11 goals in 24 league appearances this season, couldn’t replicate his form and was substituted in the 78th minute.

Trabzonspor took the lead three minutes after the breakthrough Abdülkadir Ömür, but substitute Joel Pohjanpalo leveled the scores for the hosts a few minutes later with a penalty.

The Finnish striker scored his second of the game and put Rizerspor ahead for the first time in the 64th minute with another penalty.

The lead lasted for eight minutes as Jorge Djaniny equalized for league leaders Trabzonspor.

With the game heading for a draw, the referee decided to award the third penalty to Rizerspor in the final minute of added time and Joel Pohjanpalo converted for his hat-trick.

The defeat brought an end to Trabzonspor’s incredible run. The last lost game was on 11th December 2021, in a 2-1 loss at Antalyaspor.

Despite the defeat, Trabzonspor, on 70 points, is 15 points clear on top of the league.
