Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi claims he nearly became a Celtic player

Super Eagles and Arsenal forward Alexander Iwobi has revealed he could’ve signed for Celtic as a teenager.

The 22-year-old forward has become a regular for Unai Emery’s revitalized Gunners this season but it could all have been very different.

Aged 16, the Nigeria international was at a career crossroads after being told he was free to leave the London club back in 2012.

Iwobi claims there was a serious interest from Celtic but he decided against making the switch north of the border as he battled to make his Arsenal dreams come true.

“I had offers from Celtic and Southampton as well. Celtic was the main one but I wasn’t ready to go to Scotland. I thought it was best to stay at Arsenal but I have to say it felt weird.

“I was playing for England but I felt maybe I wasn’t rated. My England team-mates and everyone else was getting in my ear saying that Arsenal doesn’t love me because they weren’t offering me a deal.

“It was hard especially because at school as well everyone was talking about it.”
