Vincent Kompany health scare dominated headlines this weekend after the Bayern Munich manager collapsed while watching a reserve-team training session on Friday.
The 40-year-old former Manchester City and Belgium captain required immediate medical attention at the club’s Säbener Straße training ground and was taken to hospital in Munich by ambulance. A rescue helicopter had also landed at the site, underscoring the seriousness of the incident, though he was ultimately transported by medical vehicle.

Bayern Munich confirmed the news in an official statement: “Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday. The first-team head coach was watching the second string’s session.
Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care. His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice.” Reports indicate he is in a stable condition.
The Bayern Munich manager collapse followed a week of underlying health issues. Kompany had been battling a nasty viral infection that affected his legs and caused hip pain. He missed training sessions and the pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Arsenal (a 2-2 draw), with assistant Aaron Danks stepping in. Despite feeling unwell, Kompany insisted on being present on the touchline.

After the game he admitted: “I caught a pretty nasty virus last week… I didn’t listen to my body, and at some point my body just said: ‘Right, that’s enough now!’” Similar discomfort had been visible during the previous weekend’s emphatic 6-1 Bundesliga thrashing of RB Leipzig, when he largely remained seated and needed to rest at half-time.
Sporting director Max Eberl stressed that Vincent Kompany’s health is the club’s absolute priority. “Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs,” Eberl said. Further updates on Saturday confirmed Kompany remains stable but will miss “weeks, not days.” Danks is expected to take charge for Sunday’s Bundesliga trip to Freiburg and beyond.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga form remains strong under Kompany’s leadership. The defending champions sit at or near the top of the table (level on points with Borussia Dortmund around the 14-point mark after early-season matches), buoyed by the dominant Leipzig result and a solid overall start to the campaign.
The squad’s resilience will be tested in the manager’s absence, but the foundations Kompany has built—high pressing, attacking fluency, and squad depth—leave the Bavarians well-placed to maintain their title challenge.
Fans and the football community have flooded social media with well-wishes for the popular coach.
As Bayern prepare for Freiburg without their leader on the sidelines, the focus remains firmly on Kompany’s full recovery. Health comes first—football can wait.
