Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna kicked off his 2025 ITTF World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 (11-6, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8) victory over Benin’s Abdel-Kader Salifou.
In a high-octane rematch of their previous clash at the ITTF African Cup, both players showcased their trademark flair and grit, but it was world No. 20 Aruna who emerged victorious—showing nerves of steel to fend off a spirited fightback from the resurgent Salifou.
“It is always tough to play the first match in these events,” said Aruna after the match.
“Getting a 2-0 lead gave me some confidence. He came back strongly in the third and fourth games, but I stayed calm and held on.”
“I am really happy and satisfied with my performance.”
Indeed, the turning point came in the fourth game when Salifou led 8-6 and appeared on the verge of forcing a decider.
However, Aruna dug deep, reeling off five straight points to seal the match and start his World Cup journey on a high in the newly revamped group-stage format.
Salifou, playing only his second match for Benin in over five years, showed impressive sharpness and hinted at a strong tournament ahead despite the loss.
“I had chances to draw level. I was leading 8-6 in the fourth, but credit to Aruna for fighting back,” said Salifou.
“I will keep giving my best and focus on the next match.”
Africa’s dominance didn’t stop there
On the women’s side, Hana Goda of Egypt, fresh off her ITTF African Cup triumph, laid down a marker with a ruthless 4-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-4, 11-8) demolition of Malaysia’s Seak Hui Li.
The teenage sensation barely put a foot wrong, dominating rallies with speed, spin, and surgical precision.
Veteran Egyptian Dina Meshref also began her eighth World Cup appearance in style, defeating Zhu Chengzhu 3-1 (11-9, 11-9, 11-5, 6-11). Her composed play and tournament savvy once again proved decisive.
With Africa’s top stars delivering strong opening-day performances, the continent’s hopes remain high as the 2025 ITTF World Cup continues in Macao.
