Former African 100m sprint champion and Nigerian Athletics Legend Chidi Imo has appealed to new sensation Divine Oduduru to commit his allegiance to Nigeria and hopefully ignore the lure of representing any other Country.
Imoh who spoke on Brila FM’s Breakfast show, Sports Machine on Friday acknowledged Oduduru as real talent and admits it might be difficult to convince him to stay put.
Oduduru set a world leading time (19.76) in the 200m in April at an invitational and clocked sub -10 in the 100m at the same event.
The improvement shown by the 2016 Olympian, who is currently at Texas Tech in the US, could quickly become the subject of an international tug-of-war between nations with “deep pockets”.
Imoh also informed that he and former Nigerian champion, Innocent Egbunike will speak with the youngster.
Asked if Oduduru could be tempted to switch allegiance, Imoh said, “You’re right and that can happen.”
“Since we’ve left it’s (Athletics) been like dead, so if he’ll choose to represent Nigeria it will be great.
“Countries with deep pockets will offer him big money, but, I would love him to represent Nigeria.
“Recently I spoke with Innocent (Egbunike) and we’ve made plans to call him and try to convince him to stay with Nigeria,” he explained.
