Striker Taiwo Awoniyi’s hope of winning a trophy with Union Berlin this season has been dashed by a defeat to RB Leipzig in the German Cup on Wednesday.
With Bayern Munich running away with the league title, the DFB Pokal Cup was the only realistic chance of Union Berlin winning a silverware.
In addition, Union Berlin have never won the competition in their history, and reaching in the final four brought hope to the Club and the entire City.
However, the dream ended with a 2-1 defeat semi-final clash at RB Leipzig last night.
Awoniyi was involved in the game but could do nothing to RB Leipzig sending his team out of the competition.
The Nigerian international who scored his 13th goal of the season was carrying the dream of the fans on his back but failed to deliver when it matters most.
He was marshaled by the visitors’ defenders and wasn’t allowed a breathing space all through his stay on the pitch.
Union Berlin opened the scoring in the 25th minute through Sheraldo Becker, but Andre Silva restore parity in the 61st for RB Leipzig.
Emil Forsberg sealed the final berth for Leipzig with a last-minute goal to send Union Berlin out of the competition.
Union Berlin will now shift focus to the league as the top-four finish is still within their reach.
They are currently sixth in the Bundesliga standings — five points behind fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen.
