Awoniyi guides Union Berlin to German Cup semifinal

Taiwo Awoniyi was on parade for Union Berlin in their German Cup victory against St Pauli on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles striker had a great performance on the pitch and was unlucky not to get a goal for his team in the encounter.

The visitors who paraded Afeez Aremu had the difficult task handling Taiwo Awoniyi who made it double figures for the season on Saturday.

Awoniyi almost gave Union Berlin the lead after 15 minute, when turned the defender inside-out but fired straight at Dennis Smarsch.

Union Berlin continued to press for the opening, but it was Afeez Aremu and his teammates that took a shock lead after 21 . A nicely-taken free-kick was laid off to Kyereh and the forward smashed a low shot into the corner of Rönnow’s goal.

However, Union Berlin managed to restored the parity on the stroke of half time, following a fine work from Awoniyi who set up Sheraldo Becker.

Awoniyi flicked a long ball behind the St. Pauli defence and Goalkeeper Smarsch misjudged the clearance and Becker smashed the ball into the empty net to send the teams in level at the break.

After the restart, Timo Baumgartl found Awoniyi with a cross from the left-win, but somehow the striker couldn’t direct the ball towards goal.

Five minutes later, Becker returned the favor by creating another big chance for Nigerian, but still couldn’t get the better side of the goalkeeper.

In the 65th minute, Coach Urs Fischer substituted Awoniyi for Andreas Voglsammer and the striker made his mark almost immediately by netting the winner for Union Berlin.

St. Pauli pressed for equaliser, but Fischer’s men doggedly held on and secure their place in the final four of the German Cup.
