Awoniyi’s match winner lifts Nottingham Forest out of Relegation zone

Taiwo Awoniyi’s goal secured all three points for Nottingham Forest on the road against Southampton at the St. Mary’s on Wednesday.

Awoniyi followed up his man of the match performance against Chelsea by netting the only goal of the game to give Steve Cooper’s side a big result in the relegation survival battle.

The Nigerian struck in the 27th minute to hand Forest their first away league win of the season.

Brennan Johnson capitalised on an error from a Southampton defender before he pulled it back for Awoniyi, who buried the chance – only Forest’s second away league goal of 2022-23.

The goal was Awoniyi’s fourth in the Premier League this season and it was enough to lift Forest out of the relegation zone.

Forest have now lost only two of 10 games in all competitions and moved above West Ham, Everton and Bournemouth from 18th to 15th.

Joe Aribo’s Southampton have now won once in 13 league games since beating Chelsea 2-1 on 30 August.
