Barcelona kit for 2019-2020 was revealed as they ditched the traditional stripes for the chequered pattern to pay homage to historic city’s unique design.

The Spanish giants new kit design takes its inspiration from the city of Barcelona by incorporating the characteristic blocks of its Eixample district, home to some of the most emblematic buildings designed by the great architect Antoni Gaudí.

All four captains of the barcelona men’s team were among the stars to feature in the club’s unveiling on Monday evening, Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique, Midfielder Sergio Busquets and Utility man Sergi Roberto all posed in the club’s new home shirt, which is already available from June 4.

The kit also features traditional blue shorts and blue socks with a red trim and it will go on sale to the general public on June 4.

Another new aspect, compared to recent kits, is the position of the Catalan flag. The design is usually located at the back of the neck but is now situated on the neck and in the shape of a V instead.

In 2015-16, Barcelona swapped stripes for hoops on their home kit but the checkboard design is another fresh take on one of world football’s most iconic shirts.

For the first time, the launch campaign included members of Barcelona’s various sports team. Alongside Barcelona men First team, women’s team players Lieke Martens, Alexia Putellas and Vicky Losada in the campaign.

Basketball player Pierre Oriola, handball star Víctor Tomas, roller hockey ace Ignacio Alabart and futsal trickster Ferrão were also involved.
