Bassey aims to follow Kanu and Finidi footsteps at Ajax

Defender Calvin Bassey believes he made the right decision to reject offers from other teams in favor of Ajax Amsterdam.

The Nigerian international was heavily linked with a transfer to Aston Villa, a club managed by his former boss boss Steven Gerrard after his exploits last season.

Brighton and Hove Albion along with Sevilla were also keen on the player, but he opted to sign for Ajax Amsterdam who has history of playing in the Champions league and developing players.

“They play in the Champions League and they win trophies. They have got a history. The players who have come in and out of this club who have gone on to be amazing players and careers at Ajax or elsewhere just shows that something is right here.

“It just made perfect sense for me. When I got the call, you didn’t have to ask me twice. It was a definite yes. No doubt. It’s a nice feeling having such a great club interested in you. Even just the interest, but for them to follow through and for me to be here, I can’t put into words really.” He said.

Bassey became the lastest Nigerian to sign for Ajax, after Kanu Nwankwo, Pius Ikedia, Ogbonna Kanu , Tijani Babangida, Sunday Oliseh and his current coach at the national team level Finidi George.
