Calvin Bassey and Ajax Amsterdam have been knocked out of this season’s UEFA Europa League.

Ajax were beaten 3-1 by Bundesliga side Union Berlin in the round of 32 second leg clash on Thursday.

The German side advanced to the next phase 3-1 on aggregate, after the first leg in Amsterdam ended goalless.

Bassey earned a starter’s spot in John Heitinga’s first XI, and played the entire duration of the game.

It wasn’t a perfect night for the 22 year-old Nigerian international, as he committed two fouls, including a hand ball in the box which resulted to a penalty for the hosts.

He made just one successful tackle, but won two vital headers and made three clearance.

The defeat brought Ajax’s European adventure to an end for the season, but they’ll be back in domestic league action at the weekend.

The team travels to Vitesse on Sunday for their 23rd league game this season. and will be seeking to close the three points gap with leaders Feyenoord.
