Calvin Bassey is satisfied with his league debut for Ajax Amsterdam and expressed gratitude to manager for fielding him.
Recall Bassey was sent off during the Super cup clash with PSV Eindhoven and the red card forced him to miss the Champions’ first two domestic games of the season.
Bassey however made his first start for the Dutch Champions against Sparta Rotherham over the weekend and he enjoyed 90 minutes of action.
The Nigerian partnered Jurrien Timber in the central defense and they both helped the Alfred Schreuder-led side to keep a clean sheet.
A Steve Bergwijn’s goal was all the Champions needed to pick the three points against the stubborn Sparta side.
In a chat with ESPN, Bassey said, he’s happy to played his first competitive game for Ajax, and he revealed what he’s learnt since joining the former European Champions.
“I thank God, the team and the manager that he fielded me. It is a blessing to make my starting and league debut for this club. I keep working to improve every game. I’m trying to learn and get better.
“It was a reasonable game. The first half was better and in the second half we fell back a bit. In the end, we did well by taking the three points.
“In some matches you don’t play your best game, but it is important that you win and get the three points. We did that well.”
“Ajax is known for tiki-taka football. You have to move into other rooms to receive the ball.
“It’s about learning and building connections with the team. I have to learn what certain players feel comfortable with. We have to work on it every day,” Bassey explained.
