Bawou Gabrielle reveals inspiration behind her heroic performance for Bayelsa Queens

Bawou Gabrielle has revealed the inspiration behind her sterling performance for Nigerian Champions Bayelsa Queens at the just concluded CAF Women’s Champions League.

The goalkeeper was instrumental as the Prosperity Girls clinched third place, beating Simba Queens of Tanzania in the process.

The Cameroon international produced strings of brilliant goalkeeping to halt Simba’s dream of a medal victory and ensure the Nigerians earn a 1-0 win to seal the bronze medal on Saturday.

Following her third-place exploits, Gabrielle became the only goalkeeper to have won the Woman of the Match award twice but the shot-stopper has credited the bronze win to teamwork.

“It’s difficult for goalkeepers becoming the woman of the match. I think it’s a result of hard work,” she admitted.

“Let’s understand that our team is part of the best teams in the competition. And if we go home with empty hands like that, that will be really painful. We had work that we have to tackle against Simba.

“Therefore, it was essential for us to give everything possible for us to get the best out of it. The teamwork paid off a lot because our mind was focused on winning third place match to celebrate the bronze medal.” She told CAFonline.

Bayelsa Queens is the first Nigerian side to win a medal at the tournament.
