BBC snubs Super Eagles stars for African Footballers top award

The nominees for 2018 BBC African Footballer of the year has been announced with no Nigerian Super Eagles player on the list.

The shortlist, which was compiled by a panel of African football experts, includes Morocco captain Medhi Benatia , Senegalese duo of Kalidou Koulibaly and Sadio Mane, Thomas Partey of Ghana and current holder of the award Mohamed Salah of Egypt.

However, there was no place for Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo who scored 21 goals in just concluded Chinese super league and also scored on six occasion in 2019 AFCON qualifiers to lead Nigeria back to the tournament.

Of the five players nominated for the prestigious award, only Thomas Partey of Ghana did not appear at the 2018 World Cup but he made a cameo appearance in the final of UEFA Europa league triumph of Athletico Madrid.

Vote opened at 7pm GMT on Saturday 17 November and ends on Sunday 2 December, with the results to be announced on Friday 14 December .

The award’s past winners includes Former Nigeria international Jay-Jay Okocha, Ghana’s Michael Essien, the Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure, and Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez.
