Belief key to Calvin Bassey becoming a success at Ajax

Calvin Bassey’s transfer from Rangers to Ajax has been dubbed as one of the the wrong move in the history of European football.

The defender has been under heavy scrutiny from almost all Dutch football stakeholders as they believed Ajax overspent on the struggling defender.

The Dutch giants part ways with £25million to bring the defender to Amsterdam after impressing on his full debut season in Glasgow during which he shone like a million stars in the Scottish Cup and Europa League Finals.

The Nigerian he has struggled to prove his worth since his arrivalwith legends in the Netherlands as well as pundits, critical of him almost every week.

Former player Wesley Sneijder is one of the constant critic of the Nigerian, stating that Ajax spent too much on the player because they became nonchalant having raked in megabucks from the sales of Antony and Lisandro Martinez.

“If you eventually have so much money in your bank account, you become nonchalant and you miss creativity,” he told VoetbalZone.

“Ajax received €120m for Antony and Lisandro Martínez together last summer and then Ajax made ten bad business with that money. You just have to be able to do it.

“For example, they bought Calvin Bassey from Glasgow Rangers for €25m – that is one of the terrible business in the history of European football; an indictment against Ajax’s youth policy! Then I ask you: Did they scout Bassey with their own eyes?”.

Despite the criticisms, Bassey has been a key member of Ajax squad, making 35 appearances across all competitions, scoring one and providing three assists.

Caretaker boss Jonny Heitinga vowed to improve the defender who he said had remain professional amidst the criticism.

Heitinga reckons that Bassey has produced a number of top performances in the league and in Ajax’s wins over Feryenood in the Cup semi final.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Bassey obviously needs more time to learn the Ajax style of play and next pre season is so important for him.

He’s still very young so it’s a great signing for Ajax. He has some rough edges but Ajax is the perfect place to polish those up.
