Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr has fired the first shots ahead Nigeria’s clash against Croatia at the FIFA 2018 World Cup, warning his opposite number, Zlatko Dalić, that “big stars” alone don’t win matches.
Nigeria open their world cup campaign against Croatia at the Kaliningrad Stadium on June 16 and Rohr is embracing the underdog toga with aplomb.
Per, Sam Audu the 64-year-old German yielded to the superiority of Vatreni – on paper – at a presser on Wednesday, when he said “They are all wonderful players…playing in biggest teams in Europe…On paper with their names, Croatia, are much better than us.”
The European’s whose best outing at the World Cup was a Bronze podium spot at the 1998 World Cup, boasts of the likes of Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic, Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic in their 23-man squad.
Rohr did, however, leave them with a defiant message:
“We admire this team, but we do not plan to watch them when we play against them, we hope to fight.
“On paper with their names, #CRO are much better than us, but, sometimes on the pitch, it could be different. We don’t have their big stars, but we try to play collectively with our young team.”
