Canada sweats against AWCON bound Nigeria

Nigeria’s Super Falcons earned a well deserved 2-2 draw in their final friendly game against Canada on Monday.

The African Champions traveled to the Starlight Stadium in Langford with revenge in mind after losing losing the first meeting 2-0 in Vancouver last Friday.

Randy Waldrum’s ladies showed their intentions from the blast of the whistle and they took the hosts by surprise when Ifeoma Onumonu scored the opening goal inside 5 minutes.

Falcons went into the break with the advantage, but parity was restored immediately after the restart.

Canada levelled through Christine Sinclair, who took advantage of a mix-up between Chiamaka Nnadozie and her defenders.

The Falcons again responded and regained their lead three minutes later when Rasheedat Ajibade’s intended cross nestled into the net.

The Canadians thought they had level again in the 66th minute, but woodwork came to Nigeria’s rescue and denied Sinclair her second of the day, after beating goalkeeper Nnadozie.

Zadorsky, however, scored a late header to deny the African champions what could have been a famous win.

Overall, it was a good test for both sides and the improved performance by Nigeria, who are preparing for the 2022 African Women Championship in Morocco.
