Canadian Stadiums Built With Public Funds

Canadian Stadiums Built With Public Funds

Sports stadiums have always been places of special importance on both local and national levels. Every country or town takes much pride in their stadiums since they are the places where they welcome other teams. What is more, stadiums are also used for big concerts of huge international stars or even events of international importance like the Olympics or World Cups.

This is why many countries decide to use public funds to build and maintain sports stadiums. For example, Canada.

Many Canadian stadiums have been built, rebuilt, or maintained with the help of public funds. And it comes as no surprise since, most of these venues have a great economic, touristic, and architectural importance for this country. So here are some of these sports venues that exist due to the taxpayers’ money.

Rogers Place

After more than two years of construction, Rogers Place was finally opened in September 2016, in Edmonton, Alberta. This city-owned indoor arena has a seating capacity of over 18,000 and it can host more than 20,000 people when used as a concert space. Nearly half of the funds that were needed for the project were taken from the budget of the City of Edmonton. The other half was donated by the owners of NHL’s Edmonton Oilers and a minor percentage was taken from the sale of tickets.

It’s obvious that Canadians have yet a lot to learn from their neighbors in the south since there are plenty of other ways in which they could have gathered funds for a new stadium, or at least for its maintenance. For example, some US stadiums have sports betting lounges, where bettors go to relax and place a wager. If done in Canada, it could increase the overall revenue that the stadium makes, but it would also attract a greater number of bettors to the venue.

And since online and land-based casino gambling is already very popular in Canada this wouldn’t be so hard to pull off. Canada already has many amazing online casinos available as well as many online players. If you want to find the best, online gambling platforms go to real money online casinos and find the most trusted ones. So, it would be a great idea for Canadian stadiums to include sports betting and gambling lounges in their arenas so they would gather additional funds needed for rebuilding and maintenance.

B.C. Place

Another Canadian sports stadium that was renovated with the help of public funds is B.C. Place in Vancouver. The company that was in charge of building this arena, called PavCo, was given over 500 million dollars from the B.C. government so they could see the project through. Most of the public funds were used for a new feature of the arena which is the retractable roof.

New Mosaic Stadium

About two-thirds of the needed funds for the New Mosaic Stadium project are used from the taxpayers’ money. The arena will be the home of the CFL Saskatchewan Roughriders once the project is over. More than 70 million dollars were given by both City of Regina and the provincial government, and only a “small” part (25 million dollars) was donated by the club owners.

MTS Centre

In order to be able to bring NHL back to the city of Winnipeg, all three levels of government had to give their share of funds so that the MTS Centre would be finished in time. Even though it opened in 2004, and NHL was back in the city 7 years later, it was considered a successful project.

BMO Field

The home of Toronto FC opened in 2007 under the name BMO Field. It took a little more than 60 million dollars to finish this sports stadium which is owned by the municipality. Like in the case of MTS Centre, every level of government has given a part of the money needed for this stadium to be completed.
