Chukwueze fails to save Villarreal from defeat at Alaves

Super Eagles exciting winger Samuel Chukwueze was on the losing side as his club Villarreal suffered a 2-1 defeat to Deportivo Alaves in Wednesday’s Spanish La Liga game played at Estadio Mendizorroza.

Chukwueze retained his place in the starting lineup and partnered Manuel Trigueros, Daniel Pajero, and Etienne Capoue in the midfield for the encounter.

The Nigerian international however failed to reproduce the magic that saw him scored twice against Levante last weekend as most of the crosses he attempted were blocked by opposing defenders.

Chukwueze was unable to influence the game and was replaced by Moi Gomes with twenty minutes left on the clock.

Former Stoke City Joselu was the chief tormentor on the night as he scored one and assisted the winning for Deportivo Alaves.

Joselu gave Deportivo the lead in the 17th minute, but Paco Alcacer leveled the scores for the Yellow Submarines five minutes into the second half.

Deportivo finally got their deserved winner with ten minutes left on the clock, when Joselu set up Edgar Mendez to make it 2-1.

A win or draw would have moved Villarreal from sixth place to fifth above Real Betis and increase their chances of picking one of the Europa League spots.
