Ahead of their opening game at the FIFA 2018 World Cup against Nigeria, Croatia have been rocked with a scandalous news, that, star players Luka Modric and Dejan Lovren will both be tried for perjury in a case linked to their transfers from Dinamo Zagreb.
Both Modric and Lovren have been in a long running battle with state prosecutors over the discrepancies in the transfer deals taht saw them leave the Croatia league in the early 2000s.
On June 13, 2017, Modric was investigated on the suspicion of “committing the criminal offence of giving false testimony” at the tribunal in eastern Croatia, according to the prosecutors’ statement [As.com / AFP 19 de June de 2017].
Meanwhile, a Croatian court recently found Lovren had illegally collected 50% of the transfer fee made from his move from Dinamo Zagreb.
As per Aleksandar Holigar [Four Four Two, The Guardian], Both Lovren & Luka Modric are expected to be tried for perjury.
If found guilty, the players could face lengthy jail terms.
The case is not expected to affect their participation at the FIFA 2018 World Cup.
