CWG: Team Nigeria’s Onyekwere wins Gold in Discus Throw

Team Nigeria continues her impressive outing at the on-going Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as Onyekwere Chioma and Amaechi Obiageri won gold and bronze medal in women’s Discus event.

Onyekwere Chioma grabbed the Gold medal after dominating the event from the start, while Amaechi Obiageri came from behind to pick the Bronze on Tuesday.

Chioma Onyekwere, who is the reigning African Games and African Championships champion, claimed the ultimate prize with a distance throw of 61.70m and Obiageri Amaechi coming third with throw of 56.99m.

Onyekwere, 28, became the first Nigerian woman to win the Commonwealth Games gold in the Discus Throw event and the second Nigerian after Adewale Olukoju to win the Discus Throw title for Nigeria in the history of the championships.

Home girl Jade Lally finished second and picked the silver medal with a throw of 58.42m .

Team Nigeria now has a total of 8 medals (3 Gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze).
