Cyriel Dessers admitted it was difficult to engineer a move away from Genk, especially when he’s finally settling down into the squad.
Dessers spent last season on loan at Feyenoord and became a hit at the club, scoring 21 goals in all competition and was the Conference League top scorer.
He then returned to Genk for the new season and has netted three times and assisted three in three league game for Wouter Vrancken’s side.
His good form caught attention of several clubs, but Cremonese showed seriousness and the willingness to meet Genk’s asking price.
Cremonese sporting director, Simone Giacchetta was in Genk earlier this week to discuss the transfer.
There is no announcement from the clubs yet, but it is clear that the striker has his sights set on a Serie A.
Explaining his decision to leave the club, the 27 year-old who might have played his last game for KRC Genk on Saturday, said he’s desperate to test himself in a top Championship.
“To take the step to a major competition is and remains my dream,” Dessers said.
“A top competition has always been my dream. I have never hidden that. If I stayed in Genk, I might be able to compete for the top scorer title, but I’m ready for something new.
“I played football in Belgium and the Netherlands and saw all the stadiums and teams there. I came in second and third.
“The only thing missing here is a title, but I didn’t feel like there was much of a stretch,” He said.
Meanwhile Genk manager, Wouter Vrancken could not hide his disappointment with the decision of the player to leave, after becoming an integral part of the team.
“Everyone makes their own choices. Cyriel knows exactly where he stands with me, even in the competition with Onuachu. We’ve talked about that enough.
“Then you have to start making promises and talking, and I don’t like that. We’ve talked about that enough,” He said.
Genk is expected to make an official announcement regarding the transfer later today.
