Paralympian Coaches who led Nigeria’s contingent to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth games have complained about being sidelined by the Sports Ministry despite playing key roles in making the country proud at the Games.
A coach who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the Ministry of Sports has not been fair to coaches, citing that only the athletes are being recognized for what was a joint achievement.
The Nigerian government conferred national honours on the athletes, who represented the country at the games and won medals.
“Even corporate bodies from the private sector have followed suit in what is a bad example set by the administrators of sports in the country for neglecting the coaches and praising only the athletes with gifts and awards,” the aggrieved Coach said.
“We prepared the athletes for the best ever outing at the Commonwealth games in the country’s history and this is rather disappointing that stakeholders are quiet about the situation.
“It is not a good sign for sports development in the Country. In other sports like football were all and sundry are recognized for their brilliance and ability, I believe it should be the same for every other sport without prejudice, and for the administrators to rather rise up for what is right.”
