D’tigers coach Mike Brown happy with the depth in Nigerian Basketball

D’tigers head coach Mike Brown says he is happy with the depth in Nigeria Basketball after getting off to a flying start in the 2021 Afrobasket.

Brown led his side to 81-73 victory over Mali on Wednesday, despite parading almost entire new squad from the team that played at the Olympics in Tokyo.

Eight NBA stars were excused from the  ongoing championship in Rwanda, after their club refused to grant them permission to feature in the championship.

Speaking after the victory, Brown, said the players wanted to play in the tournament, but they were held back by their clubs.

Brown added, that the absence of the NBA afford him chance to look at other players, which is very good for the game in Nigeria.

“Guys wanted to come and play but their clubs refused to release them, though it put us in some predicament but the depth of Nigeria basketball is what excites me.

“We are a young and inexperienced team but coaching these guys allows us to implement and try a new system.

“And it will help the experience of the guys in the team especially the home-based players from the Nigeria league .

“We help them and allow them to train and play with the foreign guys and it makes them get used to the way of coaching and playing,” he said.
