Dury regrets decision to reject Osimhen at Zulte Waregem

Former Zulte Waregem boss Francky Dury says the decision to pull the plug on signing Victor Osimhen on loan, when he came to the club, continues to haunt him.

Zulte Waregem turned down the opportunity to sign the Nigerian on loan from Wolfsburg in 2018, citing fitness issues.

Sporting Charleroi however took the risk to sign the player, and that was the beginning of Osimhen’s journey to stardom.

The 24-year-old scored numerous goals the following season, and the form earned him a £15m transfer to Lille, from where he joined Napoli in a €75m deal.

Osimhen is now worth more than €100m, and he’s currently one of the best center forwards in the game at the moment.

“I wish, we had room the gamble and work with him. Those results (test) were not great,” Dury told Het Nieuwsblad.

“He had only returned after a shoulder injury, had problems with his knees and had contracted malaria in Africa.

“There was a serious discussion internally at the time. I thought we should look through that test,” Dury recalled.

Osimhen is Napoli’s leading scorer with 26 goals across all competition this season, 54 goals in 92 games since he signed for the club.

“He’s got everything,” Dury emphasized. “Speed, energy, good timing to head, tactical intelligence and a nose for goals. I would have loved to work with him,” He concluded.
