Eagles have to go for a win against Ghana – Salisu Yusuf

Having failed to score a goal or win any group match in the WAFU Nations Cup, Super Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf still has his sights set on booking a semi-final ticket with an outright win against Ghana in the final group A game.

Ghana have already qualified for the next round of the sub-regional tournament after they won their first two group games and now have six points.

Nigeria are second after two goalless draws, but they could be toppled by either Mali or Guinea if either of the teams win to add to the point they each have.

Coach Yusuf said he is clear on what his team have to do tomorrow night to stay alive in the competition.

“We have to go for a win. A draw will most likely not do it for us, so we have to win to qualify,” he told SCORENigeria

“But while doing so, we have to also be cautious and patient.”

He further said perennial rivals Ghana, who failed to qualify for next year’s CHAN, have taken their chances at this tournament.

“They have taken their chances very well,” he remarked.

“We have created chances, but we need to sharpen our finishing, if we were to beat Ghana.

“Overall, we have not done badly as a team as the boys have fought, have shown character, we are yet to let in a goal, and we have not been dominated by any of the teams we have come up against.

“We just have not scored in the group games, so we have to keep working hard and stay strong when it matters.”

The Eagles have been physically stretched as they have had to play every other day after making a three-hour round trip between Takoradi, where they are based, and the Cape Coast Stadium.

“It has been difficult physically for the team and now what we have to work a lot more on is their mental strength, we just have to psyche them up to believe they can do it,” he said.

Tomorrow’s game in cape Coast will kick-off at 7pm Nigerian time, same time the other Group A clash between Mali and Guinea also begins.
