Eguaveon reveals Osimhen’s reason for Afcon withdrawal

Super Eagles handler Austin Eguavoen says Victor Osimhen is disappointed to miss the African Cup of Nations.

Osimhen was initially named in Nigeria’s final 28-man list for the tournament, but was replaced after tested positive to Covid-19.

The striker is also recovering from the facial injury he suffered in November against Inter Milan.

While speaking to NFF TV, Eguaveon  revealed the conversation he had with Osimhen, before he was granted permission to remain with his club.

“He told me that I had to understand that he was not well and that he did not want to participate in the Cup because he could not give 100%. It’s a pity he can’t participate – he told NFF TV.

“He practically begged me not to call him and I understood his reasons. When we spoke he was visibly disappointed.

“I gave him a few hours to think about it, but nothing changed. Osimhen had to make careful assessments on his injury and in the end, we decided not to call him and let it go.”

Osimhen is now been replaced with Olympiakos striker Henry Onyekuru.
